Four ways to clear a clogged shower drain

There are many reasons why you might need to call a plumber, but a clogged drain doesn’t necessarily have to be one of them. Shower drains can clog often, and you may be able to clear it yourself using some simple tricks. Of course, you should always keep the number of a professional plumber on hand in case the clog turns out to be too serious to handle on your own.

Use a plunger

Plungers aren’t just for toilets -- you can use them to unclog drains in your bathtub or shower as well. Remove the drain cover, place the plunger over the drain and let the shower run until the rubber portion of the plunger is submerged. Then pump up and down and see if you can dislodge the clog.

Snake it out

Another common way to tackle a clogged shower is to snake the drain. You can purchase a quality snake from most hardware stores. Feed the snake slowly into your drain until you feel some resistance, then wind the snake around to break up the clog. Once the snake clears it, the debris should go down the drain by itself. If you don’t have a snake you can try using a bent clothes hanger. If you opt for this method, try to fish the clog out; the hanger won’t be able to break up the blockage and you could end up pushing it further down the drain.

Get a liquid drain cleaner

There are many drain cleaners on the market that can help you remove a clog. Ask a professional plumber for a recommendation on which is best for your plumbing system.

Boil some water

If you’re not comfortable using professional-strength chemical drain cleaner, there are natural remedies that may work. Try carefully pouring boiling water down the drain to see if that assists in breaking up the clog. If that doesn’t help, try pouring in a mix of 1/3 cup baking soda and 1/3 cup vinegar to see if this is more effective.

If none of the methods above is successful, call a plumber. A professional will have the tools and expertise to trace the cause and clear the drain.

In my 25+ yrs of drain cleaning, I recommend monthly preventive maintenance, I recommend Dawn dish liquid, I also recommend pouring bleach down drains. Mostly all drain clogs could be prevented with the proper knowledge and procedure. I think chemical drain openers work in the right application. Every home should use 30 day preventive maintenance, simple bleach the latter part of the night before you retire to bed, the next morning boil a nice pot of boiling water into your kitchen sink drain. This will reduce the build the build up in your plumbing system. The most important advice that I can give to you on drain clogs, firstly plumbing system has to be constructed correctly, it must have a continuous pitch, solids should travel with liquids. Sewer gases form when drain has stagnant water. Plumbing.. the veins to your home!

Shops that require protection for high risk goods held on the premises will usually need to declare the total values of each stock item. High risk shop stock and goods are those that attract thieves and are expensive to replace. Examples of high risk stock items are electronic equipment, cigarettes, and tobacco, designer clothing, computers and digital equipment, software, computer games and consoles, drugs pharmacy and medicines, watches and jewellery, mobile phones and radios, photographic equipment, power tools, TVs, DVDs, CDs and Wines and Spirits.

If your shop has high risk stock you can reduce the cost of your premiums by having adequate security in place. This includes an insurance company approved burglar and fire alarm, window grills, shutters and bars, CCTV and sprinklers. Many shop insurers will only offer stock cover if the minimum levels of security are in place for all shops, regardless of the stock contents held. A lot of insurers may offer further large discounts to the premium if the shop owner lives on or above the premises and is there at night.

Shops by their very nature deal with members of the public and a good insurance policy will usually contain liability cover as standard. This should include Public Liability of up to ?2,000,000 for any one claim by a member of the public who may suffer loss or injury visiting the shop.

If you employ staff all policies will offer Employers Liability cover of up to ?10,000,000 one event and because shops sell goods and services, Products Liability cover of ?2,000,000 for any one period of insurance.
